A Necessary Reminder for Those in Web3: Create more. Consume less

Yes, that includes scrolling through Twitter

If you’re anything like me, you look back on the Web2 days and cringe. Fresh off the backend of a pandemic and unprecedented lockdowns, we emerged with unhealthier relationships with media consumption.

I‘d wake up and scroll through Instagram for a few hours, do errands with Youtube playing in the background, and end the night watching something on Netflix or Hulu. Twitter and more Instagram were sprinkled here, there, and everywhere.

My days were wasted, consuming. Moments without it felt few and far between. I felt uninspired and lost. Others recall similar situations but report feelings of anxiety and depression. I got lucky.

It makes sense; a lot has been said about the intrinsic value that comes with being useful. A life full of consumption is the opposite.

Then I discovered NFTs, and everything changed. I was overcome with a wave of creativity. My life had a newfound purpose. I wanted to learn and create! Check out: “NFTs help with identity crises?” for more on this.

As many fellow degens can relate, what followed was a weeklong binge into Twitter threads, discord servers, youtube videos, and articles about everything Web3 and blockchain. I had a lot to learn and needed to catch up.

Fast forward a few months, and I had an eerily similar routine to my consumption-filled Web2 days, this time scrolling endlessly through Twitter and Discord.

The hard truth: consuming hours and hours of media about creators and creativity isn’t creating. Its consumption.

What had I created? I had a lot of great ideas and had spent hundreds of hours talking and tweeting about my plans, but… had nothing to show for it. I couldn’t deny it anymore and finally accepted I had fallen into the trap.

I don’t want to feel uninspired and lost ever again. Changes were made. Are you in a similar position?

The purpose of this isn’t to push anyone towards action. It’s to make you aware that consumption comes in many shapes and sizes. Yes, that includes scrolling through Twitter.

I hope this helped!
